It’s important to understand how to choose which products to promote. Just grabbing them willy nilly probably won’t equate to steady long term income. You may hit it lucky on some, but understanding the formula of how to select your products is key to long term success in affiliate marketing.
For simplicity sake, we are going to take a look at how Clickbank, (the biggest digital affiliate marketplace online) displays the products commissions, sales and averages:
$71.70 | $61.36 | 60.0% | 91.0% | 203.24 |
$/sale: is the amount per sale you make
Future $: amount of commissions you would make if there is recurring billing such as on a membership site.
Total $ /sale: totals commissions now and in the future to give you the average commissions
% sale: the percent of commissions per sale
% refd: the percent of total sales that other affiliates have made
Grav: VERY IMPORTANT, this represents the amount of affiliates that have made a sale with this product in the last 30 days.
In Clickbank you will need to pay attention to what you make per sale, and the gravity. To know that the product converts and sells pretty well, the gravity should be over 30. Lower gravity products either don’t sell or are new. Also keep in mind that a higher gravity product there will likely be more competition with other affiliate marketers. Also keep this in mind; would you rather make 75% on a $10.00 sale ($7.50) -or- 30% of a $500.00 sale ($150.00)?
Look for recurring billing products as well. One $49.99 sale with a 50% commission for a continuity/membership with recurring billing nets you $25.00 each and every month for as long as that customer remains on recurring billing with that site. That can really add up! I also want to mention this; if you choose a product that has done really well for someone else, but it doesn’t convert for you, they may already have a huge list or be a forum owner with a large existing audience, so keep that in mind and don’t get discouraged.
So, now that you know a bit about how this all works, what are you going to do with this knowledge? Just letting it roll around in your brain doesn’t make you any money. Take your brain to the bank. Use this information and take action! Next in this series we will talk about finding your niche.
