Having a tough time working your business around your family this summer? I hear it all the time. “The kids are out of school and I just can’t find time to work my business around all the summer activities, so I am kind of at a stand still.” I’m here to tell you that if your business is not moving forward it will soon be moving backwards. Business can’t stop because it’s summer. Yes, it absolutely can be adjusted, but it can’t stop. There are ways to work smarter, and still be able to be there for all the summer activities and fun. We work at home because we want to be able to balance work and family, right? For most of us, work is a necessity whether we have a home business or if we work for someone else. Working is not an option. Income is not an option. So let’s talk about some of the ways we can have extra time freedom this summer and still move ahead in business.
Planning and prioritizing are essential parts of running a home business. Whether it’s a ball game, soccer practice, the carnival comes to town or church camp, you need to schedule it so you can plan your work week. Yes, life happens, but income won’t if you don’t keep time management a priority. Talk to your family, let them know that you need to know about upcoming activities in advance. Talk to other parents and see if they would be willing to take turns carpooling the kids to soccer practice, etc. Make it a practice to accomplish as many tasks as possible when you are doing your “running around chores” For example, I plan my week’s grocery needs and get everything at once instead of running to the store several times a week. I also get my nails done on that same trip. Both time consuming things get done in one block of time. I now have extra time later that week to plan work activities. I also saved money on gas because I won’t be making extra trips and I know I save a bunch of money by not running in and out of the grocery store several times a week. Take a look at how you are spending you precious time. Do you have a plan or are you flying by the seat of your pants? You should be having loads of family fun this summer and still be able to accomplish what you need to do for your business.
I’ll share some tips on getting more done in less time in the next post.

Great tips. I don’t work at home, but totally get that slumpy feeling that can come from feeling like summer is just another season for me and time a time to have fun in the sun. But as you suggested, since I’m a solo practitioner, I have the power to adjust my schedule. And though I can’t take off, I can cut hours here and there and make myself feel like I’m getting special treatment because it’s summer. That helps.
Celene,
I agree! I am a work at home mom and it’s an absolute must to continue making progress in my business while being present for my family. With a little planning you can still accomplish your goals!
Take care,
Becca
