So you think all new internet business belongs to the 20 -30 something computer techno-geeks?
Maybe that’s how it all started, but if you bet the farm on it today, you’d lose it! Back in the day (way back – 15 yrs or so ago) a new internet business was for those with a lot of technology knowledge. If you didn’t know how to program, design and code, you were shizz out of luck, unless you had a chunk of money to invest or venture capitol to spend.
Just thinking about starting a new Internet business that way gives me a headache.
I’m grateful for the technology geeks who proceeded me, aren’t you? Because of those trail blazers we don’t need to know all that techie stuff. With Content Management Systems like WordPress we can quickly and easily learn to build our own sites and maintain them or we can inexpensively hire someone to build it for us and teach us how to maintain it. Phew! So less complicated.
They even did us a favor and got the marketing basics figured out. Obviously the internet and human habits are constantly changing, meaning me have to keep up with the changes and be open to doing things differently all the time, but the basics of marketing have been laid out for us.
The ground work has been done. This means regular simple folk like you and me can start a new internet business without all that techie knowledge. We don’t need to be all that smart (good thing for me anyway) we just need big cojones and bulldog determination. The rest will be a natural progression. This is the age of information, we can learn as we go.
The Kauffman Foundation says, folks between the ages of 54 and 64 represented 22.9% of the entrepreneurs who started a new internet business in 2010. That’s a jump of 14.5% since 1996. They go on to say that since 2007, this group of entrepreneurs has created new businesses at a higher rate than any other age group. Are we da bomb or what?
To quote Kauffman’s research director Dane Stangler, “The United States might be on the cusp of an entrepreneurship boom—not in spite of an aging population but because of it.”
It’s a fact of life, the pensions, retirement funds and social security that we were supposed to be able to count on in our golden years turned out to be a myth. Most of us will have to do something other than sitting on our laurels. So, what’s it gonna be – sweeping up fries and mopping under the golden arches of McDonald’s or starting a new internet business of your very own? It might be a little bit scary to think about, but not nearly as frightening as the McDonald’s thing.
If I can do this, you can do this. I’m here to help. You’re not in this alone.
Leave a comment. I’d love to hear about your new internet business, your ideas and dreams of what you would like to do, any questions and thoughts on the subject or just give let me have it. The floor is yours.
