There are many ways to have a toxin-free home.
So you want to get the chemicals out of your home and use more natural cleaners and body care products for your family’s health? That’s fantastic! Good for you!
There are some really great non-DIY solutions to detox your home out there.
I make a lot of my own cleaners and body care products, like deodorant, medicated body powder, decongestant vapor rub, body butter, body scrub, hard lotion bars, lip balms, cleaners, laundry detergent, air freshener, hand sanitizer, surface disinfectant spray and more.
I’ve posted some of my recipes here on the blog and you’ll find a shizzle-ton of DIY recipes on my Pinterest board too.
But maybe you’re thinking “Well good for you Celene, but I don’t have the time or the inclination to make my own!” And that’s OK. You don’t have to.
There are some really amazing natural non-toxic solutions out there.
Many of them can be really pricey which makes most people think they can’t afford to go the healthier route, but that’s just not true.
There are reasonably priced toxin-free and healthier products on the market today that won’t break the bank. You just need to know where to find them.
Sometimes I don’t feel like making my own or just want to try some of the products on the market so I can share them with you when I find good ones.
I get many of my natural cleaners and body care products from Grove Collaborative.
It’s one of my very favorite places to shop online for natural products. They have a great selection and the prices are reasonable.
I can usually catch my favorites on sale pretty often and then I just buy an extra one to hold me until it goes on sale again, which works out pretty well.
I have a few favorites like Mrs. Meyers brand Dish Soap, Clean Day Cleaner, Room Freshener , Lavender Body Wash and Body Lotion. I also like the Method brand Antibac Bathroom Cleaner, Foaming Bathroom Cleaner, Daily Shower cleaner and their Degreaser.
Those are just the things I’ve tried and ended up buying over and over again. There are tons of other great products.
They even have sustainable toilet paper, tissues and paper towels made from Bamboo! I have to be completely honest (since I’ve bragged on the things I love) and admit that I personally am not a fan of these. I like my TP to be thick and my paper towels to be heavy and the bamboo ones just didn’t do it for me. They weren’t bad, just not what my tushy was used to. I like the multi-size paper towels too and theirs are not.
Other than that, I would purchase everything I have ever bought from Grove Collaborative again (and have!)
If you use my link you will get a free Mrs. Meyers 5 piece set on me!
You can order what you want when you want with no obligation and free shipping for 60 days on everything. At the end of the 60 days you have the option to become a VIP Member for just $19 a year and get free shipping on everything you order. Again no obligation to buy anything. It’s not like one of those box of the month or season where you get what you get whether you wanted it or not.
Aside from the the quality of their products, that’s what I really like about Grove Collaborative.
There are many more really good natural products out there…
A lot of the essential oils I use in my medicine cabinet remedies, cleaning and body care recipes come from Plant Therapy. They’ve got some good body care products as well for the whole family. They have a whole line of Kid Safe products. I always get fast free shipping and the quality and pricing are excellent.
I make my own deodorant but believe me when I say I’ve tried them all. This is the one I buy if I run out of my own and am in between batches.
Mr. Happy and I love Dr. Jacobs Castile Soap. We use it in the shower and in making foaming hand soap. It lathers really well and smells wonderful!
I make my own laundry soap by mixing 1 box borax, 1 box washing soda and one tub OxiClean Free. It fills about a 2 gallon bucket and lasts forever. It only takes 1 heaping tablespoon per wash and works really well. There are those who will argue that Borax is bad for you, but it comes from the earth much like salt. Borax will only hurt you if you ingest it. That’s my opinion, you are free to yours.
Wellness Mama has a really good article on whether Borax is safe or not. You can read it here.
You can also purchase All Free And Clear laundry detergent which I use as well. It’s low in harmful chemicals and is by far a much better choice than most laundry detergents on the market. I also make my stain remover spray with 1/3 All Free And Clear, 1/3 water and 1/3 hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle. Kicks stains azz!
A great streak free stainless steel cleaner is 1/2 rubbing alcohol or a really cheap vodka and 1/2 water in a spray bottle. It’s the only cheap solution I’ve found that works like a charm on my appliances with no streaks or smears.
I use Thieves Cleaner concentrate every single day on lots of things. I use it in my kitchen all the time because there are no chemicals but it kills bacteria, virus etc. as well as bleach. It’s very safe. You could spray it in your mouth if you wanted to. I don’t know why you would want to but it’s safe enough to do so. I’ve actually seen someone who was explaining how it worked do this. I’m taking his word for it, LOL.
It’s safe enough that I wash the fresh eggs I use and sell in a little bit of Thieves to get the chicken poop off and make them sanitary. I’ve been working on the same 14 oz. bottle of concentrate for about 18 months now and still have about 1/4 bottle left. Talk about inexpensive!
Instead of fabric softener (which is poisonous), I use 2-3 tablespoons of Epsom Salt in the rinse cycle and wool dryer balls. These dryer balls are larger than most, very affordable and reusable. They do a great job with wrinkles and static cling. You can also add some essential oil drops to them to make your laundry smell awesome.
Well, honestly that’s just a drop in the bucket of the natural products that are not gonna break the bank and send you to the poor house.
You have choices. It’s not as hard as you thought, right?
I hope you’ve gained some confidence in your ability to provide better, more natural alternatives to the chemical ridden products we were taught to buy, thinking we were doing what was right by our family.
Don’t get overwhelmed. You can’t change everything in a day. Just one thing at a time.
Before you know it you will be surprised at how far you’ve come and how good you feel about making better choices for your family.
