While I can’t claim to be a full on Crunchy Mama (I refuse to use a “family cloth”, eat my own placenta or give up my hair products), I am however a self-proclaimed Crispy (kinda crunchy) Mama
This past year I’ve been making great strides in getting rid of toxins in my family’s daily life. I make a lot of my own home remedies, use only safe and natural health supplements and love essential oils. I’ve also added a lovely flock of backyard chickens to the family so we can eat fresh organic eggs and I try to buy organic whenever I can.
I’ve been experimenting and searching for ways to make my own household cleaners, laundry soap, deodorant and medicated body and foot powder to get rid of as many toxins as possible in anything that we eat, breath or that comes in contact with our bodies.
I probably have a few friends that think I’m a little nuts, but that’s OK. They can continue using things with toxins and chemicals that are known to be an irritant, cause cancer, respiratory problems and myriad of other health issues. I choose not to.
Today I want to share my really quick and easy DIY recipe for toxin free disinfectant spray.
I buy 16 oz glass bottles by the 6 pack. The reason I use colored glass is because I use a lot of essenial oils that can eventually break down plastic and the oils themselves break down in light so need to be stored out of the light.
These bottles have so many uses, you’ll need at least 6. I use these glass spray bottles for all kinds of cleaners and room sprays (I’ll be sharing several DIY Non-Toxic recipes with you in the next few weeks so be watching for them) The chalk board labels that come with these bottles are really nice too.
DIY DISINFECTANT SPRAY RECIPE
7 oz filtered or distilled water (just fill the bottle a little less than half way)
7 oz Hydrogen Peroxide (Walmart carries big bottles for .88 cents) -or- vodka works great too
10 drops Tea Tree essential oil (can substitute Rosemary Essential Oil)
10 drops Lemon or Orange Essential oil
***Give a little shake or swirl to distribute the oils before each use.
Note: All oils are not alike. The FDA says that “100% pure” only has to contain 5% essential oil. I know… WTFrig, right?!! The rest can be fillers of who knows what. YUCK!! Be sure you only use oils that are exactly what they say they are and have no fillers of any kind. I’ve done tons of research to find the best…
I love Young Living Oils. If you are a member you get a 24% wholesale discount and can earn oils too! But if you don’t want to do that, I highly recommend Plant Therapy Oils. You don’t have to be a member and their prices are great, plus free shipping! Both companies offer pure high quality products with no fillers, do outside 3rd party testing on their oils and are very organic & environmentally conscious which means a whole lot in my book!
This stuff works like a charm. You can see the germs and bacteria dying off because it foams on contact if something is especially germy. These essential oils have antibacterial and anti-viral qualities as well. Hydrogen peroxide is only toxic when ingested, so just don’t drink this stuff or lick the counter top after you spray, OK?
If you don’t want to make your own, but you want something without harsh chemicals or you have a baby who puts everything in their mouth this will work too!
