I have to be honest and say I was having a lot of trouble in my network marketing business a couple of years ago. You see the thing is I really hate the traditional belly to belly old fashioned strategies. I threw that 3 foot rule out the door a long time ago!
I’ve been in direct sales and network marketing businesses off and on since I was a teenager.
I’ve sold cosmetics and skin care, jewelry, candles and health supplements and have done fairly well at most of them.
They served me for where I was at those times in my life, but I never looked at them as the means to freedom, just extra income, nothing more.
About 10 years ago I was introduced to a product that I loved and decided to make a go of the business. At the time I had an online coaching business and was getting a little burned out, so I welcomed the change.
You see, I finally had the vision of what this industry offers in the way of compensation and freedom to live life on my own terms! I made up my mind this business was going to be life changing…and it was. Just not in the way I’d imagined.
I spent thousands of dollars on sales tools, printed materials, vendor shows and free samples (which weren’t cheap).
And put thousands of miles on my car going to events, coffee shop and home meetings. I prospected like crazy and spent so much time on my network marketing business.
And never made a dime, so I quit.
And swore I would never ever ever ever get involved with another network marketing company again!
For the next 5 years or so I focused on my online home business coaching. I taught thousands of new internet solopreneurs how to set up the the back end of their websites and the many other online tools needed to build a business on the internet in the least techie way possible.
Then 4 years ago I was given a sample of a network marketing product that I totally fell in love with! I swore I would not even consider the business, but it took on a life of it’s own.
Within 4 months I had exceeded my coaching income and it just exploded from there!
I quickly rank advanced several times, built an awesome team of distributors under me and made an impressive residual income. So I put the coaching business away and ran with my network marketing business.
I was living the dream for a couple of years. Things were great!
I was building my business the traditional way. Belly to belly, home meetings, local events, lots of vendor events and sharing my products and opportunity several times every day on social media. Everything exactly as my upline and company taught me. It worked so well for a while, then started to fizzle.
I’d built a small empire the good old boy way, but it was no longer sustainable doing the things they told me to do.
Even though I disliked the cold calling, messaging, phone calls, meetings, approaching friends and family, that ever growing warm marketing list, etc, I did them because they were working, as the industry changed, they ceased to be as effective…well let’s just say dislike soon turned to hatred.
One day in frustration I was praying for guidance. In desperation I said “God, I know this is where I’m supposed to be but it’s not working anymore. I’m doing everything they are telling me to do but I’m going backwards. Where am I missing it? Please tell me what to do.”
In my heart I heard Him say “You already know what to do.” And I did! I knew he meant for me to use the skills I already had as a business coach and internet marketer to grow my business. It was time to take it totally online…
And I did just that!
I found an amazing new coach and mentor, learned everything I could get my hands on about attraction marketing and hit the ground running!
The UGLY truth…
Is that the network marketing industry is evolving. With the internet and social media, the way we do business has and is changing quickly. How you build your business has to change to keep up with the times. Social media link blasting, buy my product, join my team posting has become nothing more than spamming and harassing your friends.
That worked for a while when it was new, but now that everyone in direct sales and network marketing are doing it, it’s just bad selling, not marketing. No one goes on social media to be sold to. EVER. We go there for information, entertainment and to grow relationships.
If you are going to build your business on social media, you will need to learn to market, not sell. Selling is pushing your products and opportunity at people.
Attraction marketing is magnetically pulling the right people into your tribe. They come to you because of your attraction marketing efforts, you won’t have to chase them anymore.
