Are you someone who sits at a desk all day?
Being an entrepreneur with a home based business means you are probably too sedimentary.
Here’s a happy thought…
“Men who reported more than 23 hours a week of sedentary activity had a 64 percent greater risk of dying from heart disease than those who reported fewer than 11 hours a week of sedentary activity.” According to a 2010 study. I have no figures on women, but I image we should have similar concerns.
So, I don’t know about you, but I plan on being proactive about my sedimentary lifestyle.
- Eat a good breakfast
A cup of coffee does not a breakfast make my friend. Real food will give you better focus, more energy and will help you keep away from picking at crappy snack food throughout the morning. If you need more focus and energy, check this out
- Take frequent breaks
Even if it’s only a really short walk around your desk, get up and move every 15 minutes or so and take a quick break, take a few deep breaths and relax.
- Drink plenty of water
You should be drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day anyway. Getting refills can be some of your quickie breaks. Two birds one glass!
- Get some fresh air
Pop out the back door once in a while and breathe deep. Fresh air stimulates and energizes you.
- Have a healthy lunch and snacks prepped
High carb lunches and sugary snacks will do you in my friend. Not only will you feel tired and foggy when you crash, you will want more. Plus weight gain, uhg. Nough said.
- Keep ergonomics in mind
Your chair should be adjusted to fit your body and sit with your feet flat on the floor. Your computer monitor should be at eye level. Your keyboard should be level with your elbow, so that your wrists stay straight when you type. Try to move your whole arm when you use your mouse instead of just your wrist.
- Stretch at least every hour.
Stretch your hands as far above your head as you can and lock them together, stretch up, then to one side, back up then to the other side. Do this several times. Also, find an empty corner in your home (I admit there is only one in my entire house!) With elbows tucked into your sides, arms bent at the elbows and hands up, lean into the corner as far as you can. This will force your shoulders back and stretch your chest muscles. This alleviates what my doctor calls computer back and shoulders.
